Thomas Hoepker He was born in Munich, Germany in 1936.
Between 1956 and 1959 he studies art history and archaeology. In 1960 joins
Münchner Illustrierte as a staff photographer.In 1962 he joins Kristall
magazine, Hamburg; travels to the Middle East, Brazil, Peru, Egypt, Ethiopia,
Iran, USA coast to coast. In 1964 becomes a staff photographer for Stern
magazine, Hamburg. In 1974 together with his wife, the writer Eva Windmöller,
he moves to East Berlin to work as the first accredited correspondent in East
Germany for Stern magazine. Two years later he moves with his wife to New York
to work as US correspondents for the same magazine.Between 1978 and 1981 he
works as a executive editor for the American edition of “GEO” magazine, where
he is responsible for pictures and design. Between 1981 and 1985 he lives and
works in New York; trips to Cuba, West Africa, China, New Guinea, Greece;
publishes books on New York, on the former German colonies and and on the history
of the discovery of America. In 1985 he makes a retrospective exhibition tours
Germany. In 1986 moves to Hamburg to become art director of Stern magazine. In
1989 he returns to New York to continue work as a freelance photographer.
Becomes a member of Magnum Photos. Between 1992 and 1995 he acts as a Vice
president of Magnum Photos New York.
