THE ABANDONED BUILDINGS OF THE EASTERN BLOC | CHRISTIAN RICHTER

Christian Richter spent his teens exploring abandoned buildings in what was then Communist East Germany. As an adult he's still doing it, but now he takes a camera to capture the advancing decay of their interiors. My childhood was surrounded by the industrial, crumbling buildings of the former German Democratic Republic - lots of ramshackle structures, and power stations. There's a feeling that this is the end of time" - Christian Richter, Photographer I was 14 years old when the Berlin Wall came down. It was a huge change for us. People didn't know how it would all turn out. It was very exciting - the start of something new. At first we visited the West a lot just to see what it was like, and although quite a few people moved away, I stayed. Because so many people had left, everything began to fall into disrepair. That's when I started visiting abandoned buildings, sometimes with friends and sometimes on my own. Then much later, when a friend gave me a digital camera, I was able to capture the beauty of these old places. bbc

Il fascino del passato, di ciò che è stato e che ora non è più. Quell’irresistibile attrazione mista a paura che proviamo avvicinandoci ad un luogo abbandonato e la mente che parte a fantasticare sulle persone che in quel luogo vivevano e lavoravano.

Questo è il cuore del progetto di Christian Richter, un fotografo tedesco che da anni gira l’Europa a caccia di edifici abbandonati da immortalare nei suoi scatti.

“Semplicemente adoro la vecchia architettura decadente, i suoi modelli e le sue strutture. Mi ricorda che nulla è per sempre.”

Nato e cresciuto nella Repubblica Democratica Tedesca (Germania Est), Christian ha raccontato a deejay.it di aver cominciato a esplorare gli edifici abbandonati dopo la caduta del Muro di Berlino, quando era ancora un ragazzino. Il regalo di un amico, una vecchia fotocamera digitale, lo ha spinto a trasformare la sua curiosità e la sua passione in una forma d’arte.

Dall’ottobre 2011, dopo l’acquisto di attrezzature professionali, ha avviato un vero e proprio progetto fotografico dedicato ai luoghi dimenticati di tutta Europa. Christian preferisce non rivelare dove si trovano gli edifici che fotografa, per preservarne l’autenticità. deejay
