PRISONS OF ROMANIA BY ADI TUDOSE

Caretaker of the chapel – Giurgiu Prison

In August – October 2011, I have had the opportunity to spend time with prisoners from four different prisons of Romania – Craiova Prison, Bucharest-Rahova Prison, Bucharest-Jilava Prison and Giurgiu Prison. The photographs document the different activities these people take part in during their time there. An exhibition of this series was held in November 2011 during the Multiart Festival for Prisoners Exit, a music, film and theatre festival where the prisoners are the performers. The exhibition was held with the help of the National Administration of Penitentiaries, Macaia Association, Netherlands Embassy in Bucharest and the National University of Theatre and Film “I. L. Caragiale”.

“My work in photography has been especially influenced by a quote from Sven Nykvist: “The face is a world in itself”. I am most interested in themes such as silence and alienation in everyday life. I work exclusively on black and white film that I develop myself.”

“COCALARI” DI ALFREDO D’AMATO

Calea Vacaresti, zona periferica della città di Bucarest, è il teatro di un racconto per immagini struggente ma al tempo stesso altamente poetico. I “cocalari” sono i protagonisti di questo racconto. Storie con cui D’Amato è entrato in contatto “penetrando sottilmente, la psicologia di queste persone, facendosi carico che il suo “documento” abbia una dimensione etica” scrive Emilia Valenza nel testo critico. Questo progetto fotografico nasce dunque dalla volontà di documentare una realtà sociale tanto difficile quanto precaria. Alfredo D’Amato ha pubblicato le sue foto su numerosi magazine, tra cui l’ultimo numero della rivista di Emergency. Ha vinto il prestigioso Observer Hodge Photographic Award e il terzo premio per la competizione internazionale UNICEF, Photo of the Year a Colonia.

Si è laureato in Fotografia di tipo documentaristico alla University of Wales, Newport. Vive a Palermo, in Sicilia. Nel tempo ha vinto premi importanti compreso il prestigioso Observer Hodge Photographic Award.
