The spirits of Vodou are called lwa, metaphysical forces that can enter the bodies of mortals through possession.
Different spirits dominate various aspects of human activity, from sowing to harvest, love to war and birth to death.



All aspects of human existance are mirrored by the lwa. The spirits reflect kindness and malevolence, vengeance and protection and famine and plenty.



Every participant has a role to play in Vodou ceremonies, including singing, drumming and dancing. The congregants create a musical drama, a cachophany of praise to charm the spirits to earth.
