THE VALUE OF A DOLLAR

Jonathan Blaustein is a photographer, educator, and writer based in Taos, NM.
He received his BA from Duke University, and his MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 2004, and is currently an adjunct professor of photography at UNM-Taos.
His photographs have been exhibited widely in the US, and reside in the permanent collections of the Albuquerque Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. 
Jonathan's work was recently exhibited at Art Miami 2009, Art Chicago 2010, and
in the "Photography 2010" exhibition at the Zane Bennett Gallery in Santa Fe, where he shows his work.
In 2009, Jonathan founded the online magazine Finite Foto with some colleagues in
Northern New Mexico.  He also writes about photography for Fraction Magazine, A Photo Editor , and
photo-eye Magazine.

Quanto vale un dollaro oggi?

Si va da un mucchietto di riso basmati a pochi grammi di zafferano, dal pane in cassetta a sei tomatillos messicani. Tutto cibo acquistato in New Mexico, dove il fotografo vive. "Mi interessa il modo in cui la fotografia è usata per ingannare - spiega Jonathan Blaustein - milioni, se non miliardi di dollari vengono spesi ogni anno in pubblicità per fotografare il cibo e offuscare la realtà". E poi aggiunge: "Le fotografie di questo progetto tentano di mettere a nudo l'artificio; di rappresentare i prodotti alimentari così come sono venduti, (eccetto gli imballaggi), senza styling, ritocco, o illuminazione artificiale. Ogni immagine rappresenta un dollaro di alimenti acquistati da vari mercati in New Mexico. I soggetti esistono come quantità equivalenti di merce, e niente di più" (di BENEDETTA PERILLI)
