CHRIS RAINIER | PHOTOGRAPHER

An award-winning ethnographic photographer, Chris Rainier was named one of the 100 most influential people working in photography today by American Photo magazine. His images of threatened places and peoples from around the world have appeared in: Life magazine, Time magazine, National Geographic Publications, Smithsonian magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, Outside magazine, The New Yorker, German French and Russian GEO magazines, The New York Times, and the publications of The United Nations, The International Red Cross, and Amnesty International.

His work is in numerous permanent collections around the world including: The International Center of Photography in New York, The George Eastman International House in Rochester, The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, The Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, The Center of Creative Photography in Arizona, and The National Geographic Society in Washington DC.

Rainier is the author of two award-winning books, Keepers of the Spirit and Where Masks Still Dance: New Guinea. In his new book, Ancient Marks, Rainier focuses on the celebration of the body through tattoos and scarification — from the Stone Age to today’s inner city.
